Matthew McIntyre Wilson’s trademark copper and silver kete (above) are soon to head offshore.

Wellington artist Matthew McIntyre Wilson is about to start work on four new kete for a Maori art exhibition planned to be held in San Francisco this October. The exhibition will feature artists in residence, a fashion show and small Maori treasures.

It’s been a busy year for Wilson, who has been working on his upcoming exhibition at Avid Gallery in Wellington since February, while working as a tutors’ aide on Whitireia Community Polytechnic’s Diploma in Jewellery Design.

Wilson’s current exhibition, Seven Stars, at the Michael Hirschfeld Gallery, is a collection of new and sourced pieces ranging from a few months to 10-years-old.

Seven Stars was not long in the making, with City Gallery contacting Wilson only three months prior to opening.

“So many more things have happened in the last month or so for exhibitions and the opportunity to do more things that have come about from [Seven Stars],” he says.

“Even though it’s only early days, this exhibition has contributed quite a bit.”
