Homeless Mt Vic community groups seek new premises

Aug 22nd, 2008 | By | Category: Featured Article

COMMUNITY groups being ousted from Mt Victoria’s Crossways building have located some alternative homes, but the crèche may have to split away.

Three options include the Samoan Congregational Church in Cambridge Tce, Ace House in Brougham St, and a modern building in Roxburgh St, Crossways Community Trust chair Bill Southworth told a spirited public meeting held last week.

The meeting was called to discuss the future of the community centre after it was announced their bid to buy the building was unsuccessful and would have to be vacated by October 9.

Crossways Community Crèche spokesperson Kate Graham said the crèche will have to go elsewhere because of Ministry of Education requirements.

Mr Southworth summarised the past year of fund raising and council lobbying, adding the building owner, St Andrews Church, had sold it to a private buyer for only slightly more than the trust offered some months before.

He said the new owner of Crossways, Lower Hutt mortgage broker Sheryl Gulliver, said she was unaware the community was desperately campaigning to keep it in public hands.

The trust and the Mt Victoria Resident’s Association are positive about the community and intent on establishing a “New Crossways”.

Ms Graham said the crèche has identified a disused building in the town belt known as the Bandoliers. Wellington City Council would have to alter policy for the crèche to have the disused building. A gardening group have also applied to use the site.

Some residents oppose the crèche moving into the building for fear they will encroach on the mountain’s open spaces.

“If we are turned down at the Bandoliers, the crèche will have to disband,” she told the meeting.

The groups decided to hold another public meeting to discuss the future of the controversial Bandoliers site.
