Poll: You say don’t rewrite the bard

Aug 6th, 2008 | By | Category: Uncategorized

DON’T mess with Shakespeare on any account, say most people responding to the latest NewsWire poll.

Nobody agreed with changing Shakespeare to protect our kids, with 95% of voters saying Shakespeare should be left alone (5% did not know).

The poll was posted after Newswire reported controversy involving a production of Macbeth by primary students at Clifton Terrace Model School. They altered a line from the witches scene because they thought

it was anti-Semitic.

However, the alteration was criticised by Jewish Community spokesman Dave Moskovitz, who said the teacher could instead have used the issue as an opportunity to explore anti-Semitism.

Human Rights Commission race relations adviser Julie Watson and veteran actor Peter Vere-Jones had similar views.
