Back to square one in search for principal

Aug 31st, 2008 | By | Category: Latest News, News

KELBURN Normal School has turned down all the applicants for the principal role that has been vacant since May.

Kelburn (pictured) is one of five Wellington primary schools looking for senior staff amid a nationwide total of 106 vacancies at that level.

Victor Klap, board of trustees’ chairman, says there has been a lot of interest in the position but, “disappointingly, we haven’t been able to appoint anyone from that short list; so we will be advertising again shortly”.

The school has a temporary principal, Jill Burdett, who previously led Khandallah School in an acting capacity.

Mr Klap says the board, staff members, senior pupils and Northland Primary School principal Jeremy Edwards have all been involved in the selection process.

The kids do a great job of selling the school by interacting with the candidates, according to Mr Klap.

He says the school ideally wants someone with experience as a principal.

“The key focus for any board of trustees is to provide the children with a broad education and also top quality education; we are looking for a strong educationalist … to do the job.”

The position has become available after previous principal Prue von Keisenberg took early retirement.

Four other Wellington schools are looking for senior staff. Deputy principals are needed at St Teresa’s in Karori, Konini Primary in Hataitai and Maungaraki in Lower Hutt, while Karori Normal School is advertising for two assistant principals.
