Mixed emotions at Labour’s Wellington HQ

Nov 9th, 2008 | By Alexandra Johnson | Category: Latest News, News

DESPITE the night’s overall results, Labour’s  Annette King, Charles Chauvel (centre) are Grant Robertson were in buoyant mood at Labour’s Wellingtoin HQ.

Wellington Central’s new MP Robertson says he is satisfied with his 1511 margin over his National rival Stephen Franks (seen here conceding).

“It’s been a night of mixed emotions for me.  A number of people I’ve worked with have lost their seats tonight,” he says.

But as the final result went up at the Basin reserve, hoots of relief and joy resounded through the room.

The party faithful who have garnered support for Labour over the past months patted his back and wrapped their arms around their new member of parliament.

Mr Robertson (36) modestly puts his win down to his campaign team: “We’ve worked very hard over a long period of time.”

He puts Labour loss down to the period of time they’ve been in parliament.

“It’s hard to sustain support” he says.

But he is not convinced the economic crisis has been a big factor.

“I’m incredibly proud of what Labour has done over the last nine years.  Labour’s a strong party with strong values.”
