A REPORT on the future of recycling in Wellington city has been postponed until February next year.

Originally due this week, it has been delayed because of recent developments in the recycling sector.

Some South Island councils have started to stockpile the materials as the international market for them slows, says city operations manager Mike Mendonca.

Wellington, Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and Kapiti councils, whose recycling is handled by Allbrite Industries, say they have not had any indications of stockpiling in the Wellington region.

“South Island councils get fully involved and try to run the recycling themselves,”
says Upper Hutt consents engineer Jeff Haste. He believes the private sector can do a better job.

Allbrite Industries Wellington branch manager Des Fell says they are not stockpiling at the moment. They have long term relationships with their overseas purchasers and still have orders for the materials.
