Cleanup needed for cleaner-upper

A workman spreads absorbent over the Cuba Mall oil spill.

A MACHINE brought in to clean up the paving tiles in Cuba and Manners Malls after the Cuba St Carnival ended up leaving an even bigger mess.

The Transpacific Industrial Solutions vehicle had a hydraulic oil pipe burst while sweeping the footpath in the early morning.

It carried oil on its wheels and left a trail along  both malls.

“By the time they realised what had happened it was too late,” a staff member said. “The oil was all over the mall.”

The situation was soon brought to the staff’s attention and road workers were sent to lay absorbent sand on the oil residue.

“It will soak up the oil and in an hour’s time the same truck will come to pick it up and Cuba Mall will be good as new,” he said.

Some of the aborbent smelt so bad it had passersby checking the soles of their shoes for dog poo.
