Indoor soccer rigorous but great fun

soccermainFrom the outside, the old building looks like just another shed on the waterfront, but inside, it’s all action.

Wellington Indoor Sports’ indoor soccer operates at Queens Wharf in Shed 1, Shed 6 and occasionally the Events Centre, with thousands of players now using the facility each week.

Many choose to play socially or for fitness, while others come to win.

Staff member Reuben Booth says the game can sometimes get a bit rough with the more competitive teams, but most of the time it is good, healthy fun.

“Yeah, we get quite a few injuries. Sometimes we have to get the ice out, but it’s a lot of fun.”

Many of the players use indoor soccer as pre-season training for outdoor soccer, although this practice may be frowned upon by club coaches due to the high risk of injury.

“Some of them do play for local clubs but they’re not encouraged by their coaches as far as I know,” says Mr Booth.

He says that although this may be a risky practice, it’s hard to keep them away.

“I’ve seen some of these guys at three different types of indoor soccer some nights.

“They’re so football obsessed.”

Player Dustin Matthews says he is unsure of what his club coach thinks of him playing indoor soccer, but doesn’t see injury as a problem.

“I play indoor netball and that tends to be a bit worse. You’re always trying to stop at a short distance and it tends to be a lot more high impact.

“I don’t really see a lot of people get injured in here.”

Indoor soccer differs from outdoor in several ways.

The five-a-side games consist of two 17-minute halves, making for a fast-paced and energetic game.

Players are not allowed to kick the ball above shoulder height, which encourages better ball handling and passing.

Teams of five can book by calling  472-5588.
