THE TOSS brought the first surprise of the day when Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori chose to bowl first on what appeared to be a batter-friendly surface.

India wasn’t all that displeased with batting first, but it is fair to say the day was fairly even.

The Indians got off to a flyer with Virenda Sehwag leading the morning session with 48 off 51 deliveries.

At two-down after the first session, it was a mixed morning for India.

After lunch, Dravid and Tendulkar lived up to their reputations (Dravid being ‘The Rock’ and the ‘Little Master’ being just that).

After Tendulkar was removed, Laxman and Yuvraj fell cheaply to Southee and Ryder respectively.

When Dhoni fell for 52 off 89, Singh took to the Kiwi bowlers and brought up his 50 with a big six before falling on 60.

Zaheer Khan stepped up and scored a quick 33 before departing, leaving Sharma and Patel to toil for three overs before stumps were called.
