SAM TEISI found out the hard way he is not ready for university study, but at Whitireia Community Polytechnic he is getting another chance at academia.

The 18-year-old from Petone, pictured right,  is one of 24 students on the polytech’s 12-week Certificate in Preparation for Tertiary Study course and hopes getting through will allow him to be accepted onto a geography degree programme at Victoria University.

He will first have to complete the university’s Certificate in University Preparation.

A rush of applicants has led Whitireia to create a waiting list of 25 people as well as to run two classes in the next course in July.

Programme manager Solomon Daniel says students have come from all around the country to do the course.

“A lot of students switched off in year 12 and 13 and school didn’t work for them any more,” he says. “But the prospect of working at [a supermarket] for the rest of their lives wasn’t appealing either.”

Whitireia often receives referrals from the Victoria University course, which had 208 enrolments this semester.solomon-and-students

Whitireia’s programme is a pilot course aiming to help students work out what they want to do in the future and develop key skills such as essay writing, literacy and numeracy.

Students like Sam who were unable to get into university at first are highly motivated to do well in Whitireia’s course so that they can achieve their ultimate goal of completing their chosen degree, Mr Daniel says.

Sam Teisi says his main focus remains geography but the course has shown him there are other options, such as performing arts, where Whitireia is strong.
