London marathon for runner ‘just getting fit’

Jul 23rd, 2009 | By | Category: Latest News, News, Sport

lisamain2LISA BECK didn’t enter the annual Wellington Harbour 10km race thinking she would win it.

Her main aim was to get fit and lose some weight, and placing 934th out of 1388 runners would have been victory enough.

But she also came away with the biggest spot prize in the event – a free trip to the 2010 London marathon.

Lisa (40) started running last November and has competed in four 10km events since then, losing more than 20kg.

She never dreamt she would ever participate in a full marathon.

Her prize in the 2009 Shoe Clinic Harbour Capital 10km gives her full entry to the 2010 Virgin London Marathon and includes airfares and two nights’ accommodation.

“I’m half excited about going and half terrified,” says the Paraparaumu Beach mother of five (pictured right).  “I have only ever run 10km events.”

She will compete in the Hutt Five Bridges 10km next month, and will slowly work her way up to half marathons before heading to London.

“My dad used to run marathons, so he is helping me a lot. Apparently, the training for a marathon can be worse than the marathon, so I plan on training for around five months before London.”

lisamain2Lisa says she would like to raise money for a charity by doing the run, possibly the Life Flight Trust aiding the Westpac Helicopter.

According to the London marathon website, it is the largest annual fundraising event in the world.

Website JustGiving.com, which helps people to fundraise for charity, says for the 2009 marathon alone people raised more than £25 million ($NZ65.4 million).

The 2009 London Marathon had 35,859 entries, and the 2010 event is expected to exceed that number.

The 2010 London marathon is held on Anzac day, April 25.
