Upper Hutt bed shop says goodnight and goodbye

Aug 12th, 2009 | By | Category: Latest News, News

aramainUPPER Hutt will lose one of its three bed shops soon because people are buying beds from Wellington instead of using their local shop.

Bed Stop (formerly Beds R Us) – which has been in Pine Ave for seven years – is holding a closing down sale.

Bed Stop often gets orders at its Wellington city branches for delivery to Upper Hutt, because a lot of Hutt people work in Wellington, says branch manager Ara Te Pohe (right).

Mr Te Pohe, who has worked at Bed Stop for three and a half years, says the company has three stores in the Wellington region so Upper Hutt staff will still have jobs.

When the Park St shopping complex opened, he and others in the community felt it was an issue because it was taking business away from the central business area.

However, other bed shops in the complex are “more a help than a hindrance”, he says, because they are two different markets with different stock.

But he says the last 12 months have been hard and the last few months in particular have been quiet because they have not had a lot of local support.

No closing date has been set yet because the shop first needs to run stock down to 80%, which could take three to four months.

In an earlier story, NewsWire reported Upper Hutt has so far lost 20 shops in the recession, but is faring better than Lower Hutt, which has seen 35 close.
