Mike Eastwood prepares a meal for Tuesday guests.

IT’S SEVEN o’clock on Tuesday and guests laden with food are arriving at Mike Eastwood’s central Wellington apartment. The theme this week is “curry”.

Tuesday Night Dinner at Mike’s has become a weekly event, where he hosts a themed pot-luck dinner that is open to the public.

Themes are posted on his website, ranging from eggs to Brazilian to the Tour de France.

“Everybody thinks outside of the box and you’ve got no idea what will turn up, so it’s always interesting,” says Mike.

He began hosting dinners 10 years ago after a friend moved overseas and asked him to continue the tradition of a having a few friends over for dinner on a Tuesday. “It just stuck,” Mike says.

The dinner was not originally themed but people tended to ask what type of food to bring. So he now sends out an email on Mondays announcing the theme.

Participants can bring cooked dishes or ingredients to cook on the spot.

The dinner is clearly a hit, and every week sees a different array of people, as regulars come and go and at least two newcomers attend every time. Guests can number four to 20.

Mike recently went on holiday to Melbourne for two weeks, gave a friend his house keys, and the dinners continued.

Tuesday Night Dinner at  Mike’s will stop only if no one turns up – and that doesn’t seem likely, says the host.
