Vampires are the new black

EVER SINCE the release of the Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer, I’ve seen vampires modelling sunglasses for Karen Walker, high definition televisions for Sony Bravia and perfume for Ecko.

For those living under a rock, the novel is about the forbidden love between a vampire and a human.

The series has recently been turned into a multi-million dollar film franchise, with British ‘it boy’ Robert Pattinson playing vampire Edward Cullen and indie actress Kristen Stewart playing the love-struck school girl Bella Swan.

The franchise has attracted legions of teenaged followers (predominantly girls) screaming for the fang.

Recently, my 11-year-old cousin expressed to me her desire to have a vampire boyfriend.

“So you want a boy to bite you and suck your blood?” I asked.

“Only if he’s as hot as Edward Cullen” she replied.

There are two reasons why this conversation freaked me out:

1.      She was crushing on a boy that was 106 years old and with an unhealthy taste for blood.
2.      She was reading Twilight – a book that isn’t exactly child friendly.

I think the main reason for my discomfort was due to the fact that when I was 11 years old I was still coming to terms with the fact that boys didn’t really have cooties. I was definitely not crushing on undead honeys.

The depiction of vampires in movies isn’t exactly a new thing; vampires themselves have been a staple in the film industry since the silent days, so why are vampires so popular now?

Maybe vampires are real and they are using the Twilight franchise to desensitize humans in preparation for their ‘coming out of the coffin’ party, or maybe I’m just being paranoid.

Either way it looks like the vampire genre is here to stay – at least until the last Twilight movie comes out.

  1. Vampires are the new zombies, which were the new werewolves, which were the new vampires, which were the new zombies, etc etc

  2. Kristen Stewart is really the best actress for the movie Twilight. I bet that Kristen and Robert Pattinson would also make a good couple. “
