Paralympians go for gold in Wellington

ABOUT 50 paralympians competed in track and field events for the 2009 National Paralympics Championships in Wellington. 

From  Auckland, Central North Island, Southern North Island, Canterbury, Otago and Southland, they competed in discus, shot put, javelin, long jump, relays and short and long distance races at Newtown Park.

Joe Flavell was a stand-out competitor in the track-and-field events, managing to take home three gold medals for throwing, smashing three New Zealand records in the process.

The track and field events were one of 10 disciplines across Wellington, with 120 athletes competing overall.
