The write way to win yourself a US trip
Dec 17th, 2009 | By Bonnie Tai | Category: Front Page Layout, Latest News, NewsSOUTH WELLINGTON Intermediate School student Bryony Campbell is set to be flown to La Crosse University in the US to compete in the international finals of a schools writing competition.
With a story about a faulty vaccine that caused more harm than good, Bryony won the middle division of the national school-wide Future Problem Solving Programme’s scenario-writing competition.
The win will send her to Wisconsin next June, alongside a student from Wellington East Girls’ College who came first in the senior division.
Bryony’s schoolmate Andrew Bennett came second in the junior division.
The year-long programme aims to help students learn vital problem-solving skills that will enable them to tackle any problems that they will encounter throughout their lives.
Students were given the topics: cyber conflict, pandemic, counterfeit economy, Olympics, space junk and neuro-technology to base their stories on.
Bryony competed against Year 9 and 10 high school students to take first prize in the middle division out of more than 30 entries from schools around the country.
When asked what she would like to do after finishing school, Byrony is quick to answer that she aspires to be a writer.
The intermediate’s deputy principal, Christine Sangster, has been involved in the competition since 2000.
She says she is incredibly proud of both Bryony’s and Andrew’s achievement.

Have only just discovered this story about my daughter today. Just a couple of facts that weren’t quite right: Bryony’s scenario was based around the topic Counterfeit Economy (the vaccine was faulty because it contained counterfeit materials). The Wellington East Girls’ College Win was the senior team (4 girls) who won in the booklet division (different to the individual scenario writing). Finally, Bryony has won a place at the internationals in La Crosse BUT her attendance is totally dependent on whether or not we can raise the funds to attend. Thanks for the coverage anyway.
