Tim Stubbs trains Onslow Girls Only crew at Frank Kitts Lagoon

GIRLS ONLY: Tim Stubbs trains the Onslow College girls crew on Frank Kitts Lagoon.

ONSLOW College is entering a girls-only crew in the school teams section of the Wellington dragonboat festival this year.

Bobby Baker, mum of Kate Baker, says only Year 12 and 13 students can do dragon boating at Onslow College. They are trained by economics teacher Tim Stubbs.

“They’ve only been training for a few months.”

Ms Baker says the crew have no caller and have had to learn how to paddle at their own rhythm.

“The method works.”

Festival organiser Angela Sergeant says the sport is hugely popular for girls, as it is similar to rowing.

Last year, Olympic gold paddler Ian Ferguson sold the Wellington Dragonboat Festival to Gone Paddling Ltd, which is co-managed by Ms Sergeant and Wendy Smyth.

The festival will be held on February 27 and 28 on Wellington Harbour in front of  Frank Kitts Park.
