Pasifika festival gone with wild weekend wind

WEATHER UNFRIENDLY: Forlorn tents at the cancelled Pacific Festival in Wellington's Waitangi Park.

WELLINGTON’S third annual Pacific Festival – designed to be eco-friendly – had less than friendly weather and had to be cancelled.

It was “regrettable”, says Deputy Mayor Ian McKinnon, because the Pacific community had prepared a great day of performance, crafts and food for everyone at Waitangi Park.

He arrived at the park early Saturday morning to wish organisers well, but says the weather posed serious health and safety risks.

On the advice of Met Services, the event was cancelled.

“It wasn’t actually raining, but severe gusts of wind were blowing through the park and even then the tents and marquees were being savagely buffeted by the wind.

“There was a real danger of people being injured, possibly quite seriously.

“Plastic chairs and rubbish bins were being tossed about the park,” he says.

Wellington City Council and its Pacific Advisory Group had been working since last year on what was to be the third festival.

The event, with a $60,000 budget from the council ,had no postponement date.

Too windy: Waitangi park was supposed to be filled with the sights, sounds and tastes of real Pacific culture
