LAURENCE Walker was one of thousands of Phoenix fans who lined up outside Wellington’s Ticketek office today to buy tickets for what may their team’s biggest home match.

The game on March 7 could see the team go through to the preliminary final of the trans-Tasman A-League competition.

600Mr Walker (left) bought 16 tickets for a group of friends, after waiting for 10 minutes in the queue.

He missed last weekend’s game (when Phoenix beat Perth Glory 4-2) because he was working at Wellington Hospital, where he is a doctor.

“I’m pretty into the game. I need to find eight other people to join our group, but that shouldn’t be too difficult.”

There was a steady stream of people waiting to buy tickets for the game, which will see the Wellington side take on the Newcastle Knights.

Phoenix Club CEO Tony Pignata says the club’s indications are that the game will be a sell-out (34,500).

“There are still plenty of good seats lefts so we’re urging fans to get in early to secure their seats for what is the hottest ticket in town.”

Mr Pignata says that about 10,000 tickets will be sold around the country today, taking the total sales to around 15,000 tickets in two days.

“It’s a big game for the club, with the winner going through to the preliminary final to hopefully play in the grand final.

“[It’s] a great opportunity for fans to come and watch that happen and be part of our last home game in Wellington.”

The Phoenix Club would like to thank fans from Wellington and all around New Zealand for all their support over the years, says Mr Pignata.
