Army team beats foes in dragon-boat fest

Mar 2nd, 2010 | By | Category: Front Page Layout, Latest News, News, Sport

Semi FinalTWENTY-SEVEN teams from businesses and organisations paddled for glory on Wellington harbour on Saturday in the annual Dragon Boat Festival.

Day two of the event was cancelled as a result of the tsunami alert following the Chilean earthquake.

Saturday’s entrants ranged from the NZ Army, Sky TV, The Dominion Post, and Wellington City Council, to cancer survivors The Titivators, the Cancer Society, and Pasifika and Maori team Fresh on the Boat.

Festival manager Angela Sargeant says organisers were pleased with the number of teams this year, but would like more next year.

The NZ Army won the corporate division with the fastest time of the day, 01:15.7, and Fresh on the Boat won the open division with 01:16.2.

“The army took at the title last year, so we expected them to be strong,” says Angela.

She says Fresh on the Boat were the underdogs of the competition, as the group got together only last year and were new entrants.

“They did surprisingly well for such a new group of people,” she says.

Secondary schools missed out on their turn to race on Sunday, but will be able to try again on Sunday March 7.

“The schools are really rapt that we’re holding it again,” says Angela.

  1. Wakefield Hospital needs a mention here, this was their second year entering – they have won best dressed 2 years running and this year won the social/corporate prize – well done Wakefield

  2. Yes, Wakefield Hospital also did very well in their heat against Army too. I should know, I’m the team Captain 🙂 They should be proud of their performance. Well done!

However, I’d like to point out that Army’s best time of the day was in fact 1:14.84 in the quarter finals. 1:15.7 was the time from the final.
