WHITIREIA Polytech music tutors proved to their students they are going to be a hard act to follow after a gig at The San Francisco Bathhouse in Wellington.

Playing rock, jazz, blues, fusion, funk, folk and looping electronica, teachers staged the first Five Bands Five Bucks showcasing Whitireia talent in March.

Now it’s up to the students because every last Thursday of the month the Five Bands Five Bucks performance will involve students getting a chance to create some great shows of their own.

Music school programme manager Dan Adams says the regular gig is part of school’s plan to build up its connections with the community.

“Our bands are sought after for community events taking place in Porirua City and the wider Wellington region, including Pataka Art Gallery and Creekfest,” Dan says.

“Our students are also stagehands at each annual Womad Festival in New Plymouth, where they get to work with musicians from all around the world.

“We think of music itself as our great global community and we’re helping our students to contribute in that community.”

While the talent and soul of the tutors set a benchmark for the students, the first concert itself won’t be used in class as a teaching tool.

The computer would not record and the camera was out of action, so those production glitches meant the first Five Bands Five Bucks show will live on only as a memory for those who were there to watch it.
