JessMAINWELLINGTON Access Radio is hosting a Youth Week singer song writer competition at Evolve Youth Centre on May 29.

Jess Krieg (20), pictured, from Wainuiomata is organising the event on behalf of Access Radio.

“This is the first event that I have completely run off my own steam,” says Jess.

She had many things to do to get the event up and running from designing posters to writing rules and registration forms and finding sponsors for the prizes.

“Real Groovy have been awesome, they gave a $50 dollar voucher. Wellington library gave us a book which is worth $80 and Macca’s has given us stuff, and Music Works are coming aboard too. It’s amazing how many people gave us prizes.”

The companies will get plugged on the radio for their support.

The event is called Write On and it is a competition for high school students up to the age of 18.

They are required to write a song, speech or poem based on youth week, connecting whanau and reducing the use of alcohol.

Anyone at school in the Wellington region can enter, including the Kapiti Coast.

The top five contestants from each songwriter, speech and poem category will come back into Access Radio to record and produce an album, which will then be broadcast.

The judges will be Jess, Walen Edwards, Hannah Simpson from School Of Rock, plus other Access Radio hosts.

Krieg has a six month contract with Access Radio and got the job through the Community Max Scheme, run by Work and Income New Zealand.

“After my contract is up I am hoping to carry on with university and study German, classical studies and deaf studies,” says Jess.

Members of the public can watch the event from 1pm to 4pm at Evolve, in Eva St, Wellington. For more information about Write On, phone Access Radio on (04) 385 7210
