Extra projects push up Kapiti rates

THE rates rise faced by Kapiti Coast property owners is 6% higher than planned because the council has agreed to fund some extra projects.

Some 17 items – including an amphitheatre, lining a stream, new toilets and changing rooms, extra staffing and computers, and consultants – have been added or adjusted to increase next year’s spend by about $185,000 more than expected.

Overall, the rates will go up 6.81% – from $39.7 million to $42.4 million, a rise in council income of $2.7 million.

Organisations and projects getting extra funding from rates income include:

  • Kapiti Youth – $39,000
    Sought to raise funding to $50,000 rather than current $11,000.
  • Otaki Community Board – $30,000
    Funding for Otaki economic projects co-ordinator.
  • Paraparaumu-Raumati Community Board – $30,000
    Beautification programme.
  • Anthony Dreaver, Allison Webber – $20,000
    Paekakariki Hill lookout design.
  • Mahara Gallery Trust – $15,000
    Funding for administration and reception duties.
  • Paekakariki Station Precinct Trust – $15,000
    Paekakariki Station interpretation development.
  • Otaki Community Board – $15,000
    Funding for maintenance costs associated with Otaki Domain changing block.
  • Kapiti Community Recreational Trust – $9375
    Funds for toilets/changing rooms.
  • Forest and Bird Society – $5 250
    Rock amouring, Wharemakau Stream.
  • Kapiti Coast Museums – $5000
    Funding for staff and computer software.
  • Paraparaumu-Raumati Community Board – $4000
    Amphitheatre in Marine Gardens Dell.
