More than 20,000 people showed not even a threatening southerly will keep crowds from a Petone party.

The fourth annual Petone Winter Carnival started on Saturday afternoon and finished with a colourful bang after dark.

Carnival goers were treated to live bands, buskers, fire sculptures, a fireworks display, games and rides.

Circus workshops were taught juggling, trapeze, hula hoops and Chinese pole techniques.

More than 100 people participated in the Mitre 10 polar plunge, with participants scrambling to retrieve balls from cold water to collect prizes supplied by Mitre 10 MEGA Petone.

Proceeds from the polar plunge are going toward the makeover of the Wesleyhaven recreation hall in Naenae.

Sand and ice sculptures were created and displayed throughout the day.

Five fire sculptures were created throughout the day and were set alight after sunset.

One needed to be extinguished by fire fighters as embers flew off into the crowd, singeing a nearby tents.

Crowds ignored the cold southerly during the Pelorus Trust Fireshow which concluded the festival.
