Fire fighters spread word on keeping Guy Fawkes safe

Guy MAIN 1WIKI Waitai  is all smiles as she leaves Lyall Bay Warehouse with her $199 “Earth Shaker” fireworks pack, “the last one in Wellington”.

Carrying the big box of fireworks is Warehouse security person Chris O’Riley.

Ms Waitai says she drove all over the city looking for the Earth Shaker and finally found what she thought was the last one at Lyall Bay.

As she left the Warehouse, she stopped to pick up a safety guide from the fire service, which has been out promoting safety prior to tonight’s Guy Fawkes celebrations.

Fire fighters from Newtown and Kilbirnie fire stations were at the Warehouse earlier this week handing out flyers and stickers to the public and giving advice about handling fireworks.

Guy MAIN 3Firework buyers (above, from left) Nick Freeden, Sebastian Trujillo and Matt Weaver asked Senior Station Officer Mike Dombroski where would be the best place to set of their crackers.

The trio decided they would head down to the beach.

Chris O’Riley says the Warehouse follows strict procedures when selling fireworks: “[For example]  only one tonne of fireworks on the floor at a time.”

All staff are trained before they are allowed to sell them.

“If someone looks under 25, then we check their ID, and if they are in a group everyone has to have ID,” he says.

The most popular packs are the Big Boom Box ($34.99) and Showtime ($24.99).

Mike Dombroski says it is important that everyone stay safe, follow simple safety tips and have fun.

Fire Service safety tips for Guy Fawkes

  • Read instructions on the fireworks before using them
  • Use a torch to read the instructions
