IN HIS first year of teaching, Whitireia tutor Bernie Whelan has won an academic scholarship in journalism education.

The 51-year-old former community newspaper editor, pictured right, decided to apply for the scholarship because he had just completed his first university paper and surprised himself  by “doing really well”.

The scholarship, awarded by both the New Zealand and the Australian journalism educator organisations, enables him to present an academic paper to the conference of the Australian body in Sydney in November.

A former editor of the five Citylife community newspapers in Wellington – part of APN News & Media – Bernie joined Whitireia Journalism School this year, at the same time beginning studies for a master’s in education at Victoria University in Wellington.

The scholarship is open to Kiwi journalism educators who have never presented an academic paper outside New Zealand.

The all-expenses-paid, three-day conference gives Bernie a chance – along with other presenters – to have his paper published in a book.

The leader of the certificate programme in Whitireia Community Polytechnic’s journalism programme, he will present his paper on a training needs analysis. He is researching ways to develop mentoring and coaching skills in a newsroom leader.

“I hope to contribute to a debate around my topic, because it’s something that’s close to my heart as a recent editor,” he says.

“As a newsroom leader, if you look after the journalist, then you’ll look after the readers and the business itself.”

Bernie says being a journalist is what gets him up in the morning – and he has been in the industry since 1978.

He works with students on both Whitireia’s certificate and diploma courses.

The conference is at the University of Technology Sydney from November 24 to 26.
