Simmons-RitchieMAINWHITIREIA journalism graduate Daniel Simmons Ritchie will swap his reporting job in small town Wairapapa for bustling Manila next year.

Daniel, pictured, beat other promising New Zealand journalists for a $5000 Asia New Zealand Foundation internship and the chance to work in the Philippines for two-months.

He convinced the foundation with a compelling application that displayed his motivation to get a crack at the opportunity on offer.

Simmons Richie becomes just the fourth New Zealander to earn the Manila scholarship.

He says the prospect of getting outside New Zealand, experiencing a different culture, and gaining an insight into how the Philippines press scene functions, excites him.

Asia New Zealand Foundation media advisor Charles Mabbett applauded the comprehensiveness of Daniel’s submission.

“He was able to articulate why having scholarships at Asian media organisations is a good idea, understanding what the foundation did and why giving opportunities to young New Zealand journalists is a good idea.”

Mr Mabbett says the scholarships were created through the good connections the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade have established.

Several scholarships have been created at various media outlets across Asia, including the International Herald Tribune in Hong Kong , NBC in Singapore and the Phillippine Star in Manila.

Simmons Ritchie graduated as the top student from the Whitireia Journalism 2009-10 class before joining the Wairarapa Times Age in Masterton.

He received numerous accolades at the end of year graduation, includsing best news writer, best local government reporter and best journalist on the course.
