Feb 22nd, 2011 | By | Category: Front Page Layout, Latest News, News

CHRISTCHURCH is making news headlines around the world as the devastation today’s earthquake is fully realised.

Reports from New Zealand’s closest neighbour Australia include messages of condolences from the Prime Minister and concern about Australians caught up in the quake.

ABC News journalist, Emma Pollard, was in Christchurch when today’s earthquake hit.

She described hearing glass smashing and people screaming and has said that most of central Christchurch’s historic buildings have been reduced to rubble.

BBC News have asked for pictures and videos from the quake, with Christopher Stent, Christchurch resident reporting his experience.

“The whole house shook… it looks a bit like a bombsite.”

The Wall Street Journal and Sydney Morning Herald have both reported that the New Zealand Dollar has plunged against other currencies since this afternoon’s quake.

A Fijian news website has said their Foreign Affairs Ministry is contacting Fijians in Christchurch.

Wellington High Comission Permanent Secretary Solo Mara has said that it’s too early to comment on the saftey to Fijian community in the affected area.

And as far away as India the quake continues to make headline news.
