Concert for Canterbury born on day of quake

TWO hours after the Christchurch earthquake, Brad Garner was already organising two relief concerts being staged on the Kapiti Coast this week.

Brad (17) was moved to organise the concert because he was worried about his friends in Christchurch.

“Not hearing that they’re okay was the main trigger point,” he says.

”I just wanted to help, but obviously I couldn’t go down because I’ve got part-time work and school,” says the Paraparaumu College student, whose friends were not hurt in the quake

Concert for Canterbury is at Kapiti College on Tuesday night and Paraparaumu College on Wednesday night.

Performers include a Paraparaumu theatre sports group, bands, solo musicians and dance groups.

Concert for Canterbury’s Facebook page already has 160 people confirmed to be attending each event.

There will be a sausage sizzle, food and a raffle at the concerts, all of which has been donated by performers and others eager to help.

When asked of his hopes for the nights, Brad says he wants to raise as much money as possible.

”It’s just everyone coming together to do as much as we can on a no budget basis.”

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door on the evenings.

Brad says he wants the money to be given to the Red Cross but that has not been confirmed with the charity.
