TRACKSIDE LIVE: Shane Warne gives the crowd a wave at the start of the match.

WHEN’S cricket not cricket?

When it’s a charity match, judging by the approach to today’s Fill the Basin charity match by the country’s major sports broadcaster, Sky TV.

Sky declined to cover it, so the event was picked up by the NZ Racing Board’s racing channel, Trackside Live, with coverage starting at 3.30pm.

Trackside presenters announced just before the broadcast that it was being done at very short notice and with help from TVNZ and Sky teams, including Sky commentators Ian Smith and Grant Nisbet.

Cricket Wellington CEO Gavin Larsen said Sky was approached first and declined to put it on one of its four sports channels.

Trackside stepped in, with the broadcast carried by Sky.

He said TV1 and TV3 “were not in a position” to film live, but were there to film clips for the news.

Australia’s Channel 9 was there filming clips for news, and the occasion got rolling text coverage on website Yahoo.xtra sport.

On the web, nobody matched NewsWire’s over-by-over Twitter feed, which was done by journalism student Zac Kerr.
