Wellywood sign debate going backwards

Jun 1st, 2011 | By | Category: Latest News, News

SOMEONE with a professional touch is having a joke at the expense of the proposed Wellywood sign in Wellington.

This 5m long sign was mounted on the fence at Lyall Bay yesterday afternoon and was drawing some admiring comments from residents.

“It’s really well made,” says Fleur Wickes, owner of KISSS gallery.

“I do think we are going backwards.  I think the Wellywood sign is lame.”

The airport has taken an iconic American sign and ripped it off for Wellington: “It’s not creative and doesn’t reflect Wellingtons creativity,” she says.

The sign is about five metres wide and a metre and half high, and can be viewed on the Cornish Accountants live surf cam.

Tonight the Wellington Airport company announced it will rethink the proposal.
