SUMMER is coming and a Karori school is trying something new to get its pupils and into local sport for the season.

St Teresa’s School is holding a summer sport expo tomorrow night to showcase summer sports and widen knowledge about what is available.

Sports as diverse as tennis, cricket, athletics, martial arts, pony club, golf, softball, swimming and squash are part of the event.

Teacher David Milne and the eight parents on the school’s sports committee came up with the idea.

“There is a lack of knowledge out there about summer sports so the sports committee came up with the expo as a way of getting the information out there,” he says.

“At St Teresa’s we’ve got a lot who play sport and a lot that don’t so it is about giving those who do options and more variety and giving those who don’t opportunities so they can.”

Winter sports are popular because of their higher profile but Mr Milne is excited about what will be on show this week.

“I think it looks bright with all the opportunities we have got. There are even clubs coming that I wasn’t aware of before,” he says.

He says it helps to have a great sporting community with strong clubs and says it has been a joint effort between the school and area.

Mr Milne would like to see more people playing sport and even if they can get one child to take up a sport then it has been worth it.

“Obesity is rising in our culture and if we can help get kids out there, we will hopefully reduce that.”
