THE release of Wellington City Council’s 2011/12 annual plan has allayed the fears of one pint-sized protester.

The plan confirms that Khandallah swimming pool will stay open, following proposed austerity measures to close it outlined last December.

When the pool closure was proposed, resident pool-goer Alice Harrison (12), wrote a letter to Mayor Celia Wade-Brown outlining her concerns.

“All year me and my friends look forward to the opening of Khandallah Pool each summer. We even have a picnic down at the pool,” said Alice.

“I come here nearly every day. Sometimes I only spend an hour or so, but sometimes it is four or five hours.”

Closing the pool was listed as one cost-cutting option that would keep rates from rising more than 8 per cent.

According to leaked documents, the pool closure would save the council $146,000 a year.

Ms Wade Brown has since visited Khandallah pool and listened to community feedback, including Alice’s letter.

Following consultation with the council, she has agreed to keep the pool open and is “unlikely to revisit that decision unless something changes,” she says.

“I hope the community will continue to enjoy it and find ways to support the iconic, but chilly, outdoor pool in such a lovely spot.”

On hearing that her favourite summer hang-out is going to be kept open, Alice said: “That’s great news. Can you tell Celia Wade-Brown that I say ‘thank you’ for keeping my pool open.”

Khandallah pool is a 30m unheated, outdoor pool surrounded by native bush in Khandallah Park and is open for three months a year over summer.
