ALL BLACK: An artist's impression of how the black carrot may look when it is painted.

OHAKUNE locals are backing their black carrot.

The town has agreed to have its oversized carrot painted black later this month for the Rugby World Cup, and it’s great says long-time Ohakune local Anne McIver.

“It’s great because it’s free, it’s being done by Resene,” she says of the paint job, which will include a silver fern.

A spokesman for Ruapehu District Mayor Sue Morris says they are quite happy with the makeover, which was suggested by Resene.

“We contacted the growers’ association because they are the ‘big carrots’ around here and they were happy with the plan as well.”

Donna Hall says fellow Ohakune people will be happy. “The old locals are moaning because it’s always been orange.”

Peak FM radio DJ Geoff Anderson says it fits Ohakune. “It’s temporary and supporting the All Blacks and we are a tourist town.

“I haven’t heard any public reaction yet. At the last community board meeting everyone was positive about the idea.”

Mountain Rocks Bar staff member Synoma Takitimu says the bar is backing the black paint job for the world cup.

“It’s a good thing for us because we are a sports bar and it’s only a month away.”

The town and region is hoping to cash in on world cup tourism.

Ms Takitimu says the bar will be showing the games live, offering courtesy rides to and from the venue, and will have specials deals on during All Blacks games.

Ohakune New World has just received its supporter’s jerseys and hats and they will be worn in the lead-up and during the cup, says staff member Donna Hall.

On the other side of Mt Ruapehu, Taumaranui will be staging its annual festival during the Rugby World Cup, which is backed by the Ruapehu District Council.

The Turoa, Whakapapa and Tukino skifields will be open through the tournament, with Labour Weekend in October the usual closing date.
