Hutt Hospital opens doors to new kids’ ward

Sep 1st, 2011 | By | Category: Latest News, News

OWL keeps an eye on the controls of a special distraction set up in the new children’s emergency ward at Hutt Hospital.

Pushing the buttons makes a train run around a track above the kids’ heads, as well as produce various animal noises in the brightly painted waiting room.

It was just one of the attractions that drew about 1000 people to a tour of the first part of the $82 million project last weekend.

The tour included a new day of surgery unit, a room for IV drips to be put in, a new unit for those who have just come out of surgery, and eight new theatres with special blue light to help make surgery easier.

Visitor Madeline Love thought the tour was informative: “The facilities are enormously improved.”

Jasper (6) and Tobias (7) Hall both enjoyed the tour, with the train being of their favourite parts of the tour.

The new emergency department on the ground floor of the new wing will open on September 5, and the theatre suite will open on September 12.

The second phase, due to be completed by next July, will include removing the previous emergency department and replacing it with a new medical day unit, intensive care unit, theatre administration and a new endoscopy unit.
