Being re-elected to represent Rimutaka is a huge relief for Labour’s Chris Hipkins and he will not be taking it for granted.

“I will be straight back to work on Monday,” says Mr Hipkins.

His priority will be being accessible to his community and helping his party regroup after losing the election to National

Mr Hipkins and Trevor Mallard celebrated at the Taita RSA tonight, where Mr Mallard told the gathered supporters that Labour did well in the Hutt.

Mr Mallard calls his victory in Hutt South a massive acheivement.

The atmosphere at the club has changed as the results have come in and Labour supporters have been looking increasingly worried.

“It’s not going to be a Labour led government, Goff made that clear,” Mr Hipkins says.

He was tactful about NZ First getting into parliament, saying that the voters are never wrong.

“It will make Parliament more colourful.”
