Candidate walk – but without the candidates

Nov 25th, 2011 | By | Category: Front Page Layout, Latest News, News

THE REWARD: Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett hands out chocolates to NewsWire's Christina McDonald.

PORIRUA City voters were supposed to get a chance to meet election candidates on a mayoral walk this week – but only one turned up.

Ohariu candidate Charles Chauvel turned out with 60 people to trek Porirua’s Colonial Knob reserve with Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett for the second Porirua City Council walk.

“I was hopeful [about the candidates coming],” he says. “There was quite a few residents there for them to talk to, but I know other things come up.

“Hekia [Parata] tried to make it, but she’s a cabinet minister so we let her off.”

PIT STOP: Joseph and Sharon Faletetulu, from Aotea College's Pacifica fono group.

Mr Leggett is pleased with the turnout for the first two mayoral walks (the first went along the Whitby Walkways by the lake last week).

Wellington City mayor Celia Wade-Brown joined this week’s walk with her dog Storm and said she “certainly got up a bit of a sweat” climbing the steep path that rises to 468m above sea level.

Mr Leggett says residents talked to him about “a couple of issues. We talked about the upcoming election and also about managing litter.”

The next walk will be on Tuesday, November 29, at Bothamley Park in Cannons Creek.

Everyone will meet in the Champion St car park at 5.30pm and follow the track that leads to Cannons Creek Park.

The last one is on Saturday, December 10, starting at the Rose Garden and walking up to Ascot Park, through Papakowhai and back to the Aotea Lagoon.

The walk will start at 11am and will have festive activities and a Christmas theme.

FRESH UP: Porirua City Council had water bottles at the half way mark.

FRIENDS AND BENEFITS: Nick Leggett with Cr Ana Coffey (left) and Anaru Bowater.

EVERY MAYOR: And her dog. Celia Wade-Brown with Storm.
