Dunne not dusted as poll fails to stir up voters

Nov 15th, 2011 | By | Category: Front Page Layout, Latest News, News

AN OHARIU electorate candidates’ poll doesn’t mean Dunne is dusted, with only 163 people voting.

The Fairfax Media-Research International mini poll released last week shows United Future leader Peter Dunne, who has held the electorate seat for 27 years, on 37.4%, with Labour’s Charles Chauvel closely following on 35.6%.

Katrina Shanks was in third on 19% and Gareth Hughes registered just 1.4%.

A large number of voters – 34.6% – were undecided.

The poll has been questioned by readers who commented on Stuff and Kiwiblog articles saying it doesn’t show a fair result as there were only a small number of people who voted.

“A poll of 163 people? How is that scientific?” says Ross, a reader of Kiwiblog.

Furthermore S. Russel says, “Seriously, 163 voters? That’s ridiculous, and means this poll should not be given much credence.”

Elaycee says, “I very much doubt that he’ll lose this seat – the ‘poll’ of 163 is a very small sample…”

Comments varied in opinion, with some having a strong anti-Dunne sentiment while others praised him.

“This shameless fool would do anything to stay in parliament,” says a Stuff commenter lordofnelson.

However Reid (Kiwiblog) says, “Unfortunately the Nats really need Dunne to win and he’s amongst the best if not the best Revenue Minister we’ve ever had, so it would be a shame.”

Elaycee says, “Having lived in the electorate until the early 000′s, I can assure you that Dunne was actually a good local MP.”

With Charles Chauvel accusing Katrina Shanks of using her family as an election tool to pull votes, and John Key backing Peter Dunne, the electorate is not short on drama and makes for a heated race to the end.

Ohariu electorate statistics:

In the 2008 election Peter Dunne (United Future) won with 32.61%, Charles Chauvel (Labour) got 29.95%, Katrina Shanks (National) 26.53% and Roland Sapsford (Green) 5.12%.

The 2006 census showed the population of the Ohariu electorate was 60,231 people, of which 29.4% were aged 30 to 49 years old and 67.6% were European.

The largest iwi affiliation in the area was Ngāti Porou, with 855 people.
