Fencing piste is the new bowling green

GREENS are making way for the piste as the former Wellington Bowling Club building becomes a new home for the city’s swords club.

The Tanera Cres venue had been home to the Wellington Bowling club for nearly 20 years when the lease expired in July last year.

Now Wellington City Council’s regulatory processes committee has granted Wellington Swords (fencing) Club the lease on the former bowling club building for the next three years.

The new tenant is a relatively small fencing club that takes children through to masters and veteran fencers.

The site will allow them to undertake a lot of development work and provide a range of classes across the age groups and levels, says head coach Vicci Lamb.

“It is sad the bowling club have been unable to continue, recognising that we have been working with the bowling club over the last couple of years that we have been based up there,” she says.

Having a home allows the club to store gear and makes things easier with setting up the heavy gear.

“The equipment has been running around in the back of my van because we have nowhere to store it, because moving from venue to venue really means we have to take us with it,” she says.

The club believes it presented the city with a useful option for the use of the building.

The fencing club wants to continue local community uses of the venue, and develop them further.

“We would be looking at expanding the use of the building. It’s a lovely facility and it is strongly supported by the local community.”
