Kris wins, but Nats take party vote in Mana

Nov 26th, 2011 | By | Category: Latest News, News

NATIONAL MP Hekia Parata missed out on winning the Mana electorate again, but her party had a big night.

Kris Faafoi was the winning candidate for Mana, with 1875 votes between him and Mrs Parata (far right).

“Yes, I’m disappointed,” she says. “However, for the first time National has won the party vote in Mana and that’s pretty fantastic.”

Mana is predominantly a Labour electorate, having won the Mana electorate since 1996, when the first general election was held using MMP.

In the last general election in 2008, Mrs Parata lost by 6155 votes to Labour MP, Winnie Laban.

Receiving 41.45% of the Mana votes this time around, she thanked everyone for their support, happy that everyone had done “the best they could.”

Mrs Parata celebrated National’s win tonight with friends, family and team members at Pautahanui Lodge in Wellington.

This is her fourth election since joining National in 2001.

Labour’s Kris Faafoi also spent the evening with friends, team members and volunteers at Titahi Bay RSA.

He was confident, but hoped there would be a late surge for the Labour party.

To celebrate the electorate win, Mr Faafoi says he will enjoy a few quiet beers, but has a 7am meeting tomorrow so “It’s back to work.”
