Not a Green enough vote for first Deaf Mp.

Nov 26th, 2011 | By | Category: Front Page Layout, Latest News

MOJO Mathers has missed out on being our first deaf MP, and just the fourth in the world.

The Greens have received 11% of the party vote, or 13 seats, but Ms Mathers was number 14 on the list.

“I am sorry that I am not in as I really wanted a chance to make a difference in Parliament,” she says.

There is still a chance that the special votes could give the Greens enough of the party vote, and Ms Mathers remains hopeful.

She says she is unsure if she will stand again next election.

“This was my third time. So if I don’t get in, I will need to rethink things.”

Entering parliament would have been a nice present for Ms Mathers, whose birthday was earlier this week on November 23.

There has been international interest and support for her from deaf people around the world, with news article comments and messages on Facebook from places such as Ghana in West Africa.
