MMP EXPLAINED: Nick Leggett (right) and Nigel Roberts at Pataka.

BEFORE this week, none of Madeleine Rose’s family or friends understood the upcoming referendum on MMP.

So they sent her along to a meeting in Porirua this week to find out.

“None of them could understand it, so I said I’d come along to this and ask questions for them,” said.

Madeleine, who was one of a dozen or so who turned up at Pataka last night to hear political scientist Nigel Roberts’ explanation.

Some of her questions were about how to get small parties in, and she also wanted to know what would happen if everyone voted for MMP.

“They wanted to know what’s the best,” she said.

Professor Roberts, from Victoria University, said after the meeting that the audience was “small but well informed”.

“There were questions about the consequences of the boundary changes and how they affect the election.

“I thought that was very perceptive…looking to the future of the electorates.”

Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett, who welcomed people to the meeting, said he was taught by Professor Roberts 10 years ago while studying politics at Victoria.

The next public meeting on the referendum is 6.30pm tonight at Lecture Theatre 1, Rutherford House, 23 Lambton Quay, Wellington.
