TRAINING HEATS UP: Fire chief Carl Mills and Ben Troy.

IF YOU have ever dreamed of having your car washed by firefighters, then get to Plimmerton on May 5.

Plimmerton Volunteer Fire Brigade will be hosting a carwash fundraiser to support its first attempt at the Sky Tower Challenge in Auckland.

Nine of the 22 members – two women and seven men – will be racing up Sky Tower’s 51 flights of stairs in the charity challenge on May 19.

Plimmerton volunteer Ben Troy says the 1103 steps is just a good excuse to get fit and bond as a team.

“This is just another way of spreading the wings of helping out, it’s a great competition and it’s another team bonding experience we can do,” says Ben.

Instead of looking to this as a challenge, the whole Plimmerton Fire Brigade has taken this on as a team building adventure, says fire chief Carl Mills

TEAM PLIMMERTON: The local Sky Tower team

“Some of us will take our time, everyone will have their own personal goal and getting to the top individually will be an awesome win, but going up as a group and supporting each other is awesome,” Carl says.

Racing up the sky tower became a fundraising event in 2005 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

“So far the response from the community has been awesome in terms of sponsorship and fundraising,” Carl says

“We approached the Plimmerton Residents Association and that started the ball rolling getting the word out into the community.”

The goal is to raise at least $5000 for the event.

Last Saturday the brigade did a bucket collection around local businesses and raised more than $900.

“They very generously showed their support,” Carl says.

So far Plimmerton Fire Brigade has raised just more than $2600.

Those who wish to donate online can visit the fundraising website  and any money donated will go towards the Plimmerton team as a whole.
