Free Otaki health fair attracts hearty turn-out

May 8th, 2012 | By | Category: Latest News, News

PEOPLE interested in their own well-being, received top-to-toe medical screening at the free health fair in Otaki.

The organisers of the fair say the event was well attended, and they reached their target of attracting at least 100 visitors.

Dr Arturo Aguilar and Pastor Mike Taylor from the Hub Church organised the day and Pastor Mike says he was amazed at how receptive the town was.

“It’s good to see this many people out, and look at all the organisations involved.”

A wide range of health screening was offered by volunteers. Organisations included the Central Public Health Organisation (CPHO) in Otaki and Mid Central District health, Palmerston North.

The New Zealand Heart Association brought computer software that could determine the age of a person’s heart by entering details such as height, weight and blood pressure.

Kapiti hearing and audiology used a sound-proof van for hearing tests.

Bruce Little Optometry provided eye screening while Anne Mc Cabe Podiatry gave information on foot health and its role in general health.

Rachael Ikurere, an Otaki local, was certainly pleased with the fair.
“I think it’s absolutely amazing to be honest,” she says.

The event was widely advertised on Reo Fm radio station and by fliers and posters around town for three weeks before-hand.

While preparing for the fair, Dr Aguilar said he just wanted to give people an opportunity that they otherwise might not have had.

“We came up with the idea because here at church and in Levin where I practice, there’s a fair amount of people who don’t go to the doctors simply because they don’t have the resources to get out of town.”

The idea was to create a family orientated environment, and this was achieved with bouncy castles, free food and face painting.

Everyone who attended was given a free health report to take to their GP.
