Kelburn Normal School hall revamp underway
BLACK-OUT curtains, gym style flooring and a new sound system are among $55,000 of spending in Kelburn Normal School’s hall this year.
“The hall is a community resource and a focal point for the school,” says principal Justine McDonald (right).
The hall is used for a range of activities outside of school hours such as tai chi, taekwondo and the Kelburn Youth Group.
“A new sound system and Flotex flooring system, with markings inlayed for volleyball, badminton and netball will be installed,” says Mrs McDonald
The upgrade is the first of many changes in the lead up to Kelburn Normal School’s centenary in 2014.
The principal says another priority is to bring Kelburn Normal School up to date with information technology and tactile learning.
That means installing intelligent smart boards, new netbooks, flip video recorders and a school-wide wireless network.
“I have brought in a professional development course for staff so they can successfully implement the technology,” says Mrs McDonald
She says the professional development has enabled increased learning opportunities for the children.
Mrs McDonald has also instigated action research in classrooms to get children proactive about learning.
This means the pupils work in small groups to research and solve problems using the tools provided by the school.
