AWARD-WINNING Naenae college band Velvet Regime is to host a fundraiser concert in Wellington to raise money to cut a disc.

So far 16 bands from the Hutt Valley and surrounding areas have been confirmed to play at the alternative style music fundraiser in August.

Other bands performing include special interest group MAN!WOMAN!, Ash Graham, Lontalius, plus finalists from the Wellington regional finals of the Smokefree Rockquest.

Velvet Regime Singer and Guitarist Nigel Martinez (17) who’s a year 13 student at Naenae College sees it as a chance for lots of musicians to get together and raise their profiles while raising money.

“The gig is a fundraiser, a bit of publicity, and a chance to catch up with all the other bands that are performing there.”

The band plans to raise funds to record at a studio in Wellington.

“We need $2000 in total for a New Zealand on Air recording grant,” says bass guitarist Joel Averes (17).

“Any sort of money we raise will be great.”

Velvet Regime last year got into the national finals of the Smokefree Rockquest competition, which was held in Hamilton, coming out with the Best Song award.

This concert is being held at an alcohol free venue as it is aimed at a teenage audience.

The band members are hoping the event will get them more publicity in the NZ music industry.

The fundraiser will be held on Saturday 11 August at Zeal on Ghuznee Street, starting at 5pm with a door charge of $10.
