NICHOLA Ahnau (below) can now call herself Wellington’s Hairdresser of the Year after the regional hairdressing awards.

Ms Ahnau, from Reds Salon, won the top award as well as the top styling senior section.

The top newcomer honour was won by Katie Young, from Cathy Davys Hair Design, who also won top cutting newcomer of the year.

The winning hairdressers from each category will go on to compete for national supreme titles, held on alternate years.

The 2012 national competition is in Auckland on October 14.

Wellington’s supreme team also includes Amber Gill from Glory Hair who won top cutting senior and Philip Sheppard from Mane Salon, the top cutting newcomer.

Stylist Stephanie Ross, also from Reds, says she is relieved its all over.

Ms Ross entered in the urban night style section.

Her model, Katherine Morgan, described the day as pretty full-on.

Competitors were allowed to crimp, straighten, dye, mousse and tease the hair before going on stage for 40 minutes to put it up.

“Colour and stuff you do beforehand, anything to save on time,” says Ms Morgan.

Outfits were matched to hair weeks before and make-up done backstage as competitors were judged on the entire look.

Megan Smyth captured the day on video:
