Wellington Central Library braced for impact

Jul 4th, 2012 | By | Category: Latest News, News

It may have been the biggest earthquake to hit the region in a century, but not a single book fell off the shelves of Wellington Central Library.

Staff member Joanne Horner says that when library employees arrived at work this morning they were pleasantly surprised.

“There was no chaos to be seen,” she says.

She credits this to the fact that library shelves are bolted to the floor, with metal braces installed overhead between the highest.

“Some of these shelves are quite heavy, and if one fell you could have a domino effect” says Ms Horner.

“Safety is a top priority for us.”

Library staff are trained in evacuation procedures, and there are multiple posters on every floor with instructions on what to do should disaster strike.
