No win, no play for Jubilee Cup bottom four

Aug 7th, 2012 | By | Category: Latest News, News

FOUR club teams playing in the Jubilee Cup rugby competition withdrew from minor playoff games scheduled for last Saturday saying they didn’t see the benefits in playing.

Hutt Old Boys Marist, Tawa, Upper Hutt and Petone were at the bottom of the table (below) after round robin games when they made the decision.

Will Caccia-Birch, manager of Wellington amateur rugby, says the clubs involved all expressed disinterest in continuing the competition to play off for places five to eight.

“Clubs signalled that they didn’t have interest in devoting time and energy into the minor playoff games as they didn’t affect next season’s standings in any way,” he says.

“We sat down and took a practical approach about why they didn’t have the desire to play those games.”

The initiative to play off for the minor positions was brought in by the Wellington Rugby Football Union at the end of last year.

Mr Caccia-Birch says at that time all club teams involved signed off on it, and indicated their commitment.

“We now find that they don’t necessarily want it and we’ve taken that on board. If both teams in a game agree not to play, then the game will be called off.”

He says the Rugby Union decided to schedule the minor playoff games as well as the semi-finals to give the premiere players more time on the field and to benefit club takings.

“Basically the key rationale for us in scheduling the playoffs for fifth to eighth position is to provide more rugby for the teams.

“Also, to help club funding as things tend to be a quieter towards the end of the season,” says Mr Caccia-Birch.

The issue will now be taken to the end of competition review done by the Wellington Rugby Football Union each year.

“Clearly we need to sit down at the end of the comp and discuss the advantages and disadvantages for having these playoff games,” says Mr Caccia-Birch.

Oriental Rongotai play Marist St Pats in the Jubilee Cup final on Sunday 12 August at 2:30pm.
