JAPAN FRIENDS: Simon Shimizu-Metcalfe and Sol Fergus have helped organise the 60th celebrations.

CELEBRATIONS marking 60 years of Japan and New Zealand relations will be marked in a with a 60-metre roll of sushi.

The sushi rolling will take place at llot Theatre in Wellington tomorrow afternoon.

It will be made in the morning of the event, with the help of volunteers and Midori Sushi says Sol Fergus, president of the Wellington chapter of the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) programme.

JET is a program that helps connect Japan and other countries through sending participants on international exchanges.

Mr Fergus says that without Midori Sushi played a key role in bringing the sushi event together.

“They are providing the training, their expertise and things such as napkins. Without their support it would have been a struggle.”

Midori Sushi also helped the 2009 event, which included a 50-metre sushi rolled without any problems.

The Wellington City Council, Japanese Embassy, Sister City Association and Asia New Zealand Foundation are among a few organisations which are helping to host a range of events.

Other activities include two tea masters from tea estates in Japan and a Japanese reggae singer.

Up to 6000 people are contributing to the events around several venues in Wellington, including at the Michael Fowler Centre and the Illot foyer.

For the sushi roll, the Amora Hotel is also providing the appliances needed to cook the rice.

“The rice has to be cooked in a certain way, and has to be consistent,” Mr Fergus says.

The council is contributing $2400 to the sushi roll alone.

The sushi will consist of 35-40kgs of dried rice, 40 sheets of seaweed, vegetables and canned tuna.

The volunteers will get a section of the roll for themselves afterwards, and 60 tickets will be handed to the public for a section each.

The rest will be donated to a Women’s Refuge or a similar charity says Mr Ferguson.
